I was inspired to visit the island of Poros after reading the account of life there by Anne Ibbotson, in her captivating book, "Coming Slowly".  It is a wonderful read and a must for those who have a "Shirley Valentine" mindset!  The island was just as she had described it.  I visited on a sunny spring day.  There were wild flowers everywhere.  So picturesque!  And a typically Greek Island harbourfront too, with colourful fishing boats resting sleepily alongside the long quayside. The quayside, in turn, is lined with heaps of delightful tavernas and ouzeries offering delicious seafood dishes.

Strolling in the backstreets and alleys brings the reward of quaint houses, pretty, foliage-filled courtyards and friendly locals.  I wandered up through the alleyways until I emerged at the top of the town.  There I sat upon a huge rock and took in the views of the clock tower above the harbour and Galatas on the mainland opposite.  I was able to look down upon the rooftops of the houses that cascaded down the hillside to the quayside.  I could also see into the flower-filled terraces and courtyards.  So pretty and peaceful!

I sat there soaking it all in.  Idyllic!  After about an hour, and with the warm sun on my skin, I thought.....Yes, Anne....wherever you are....you have got it absolutely right!  Well done!  And with that I decided to repair to a harbourside taverna for a plate of kalamari and an ouzo, or two!

What a fine way, I thought, to spend a warm Sunday in early spring!
